# Conflicts and deletion

> What happens when two devices change the same file, and how deleting a file propagates.

## How BioBase compares versions

BioBase compares three versions of each file: the version this device last agreed on with the cloud, the file in the folder now, and the newest cloud version. A file changed on one side only moves to the other side.

## Files changed in both places

When sync finds a file changed on both sides, it keeps both versions. The version with the newer edit time normally stays in place. The other is saved beside it as a copy whose name ends in `.conflict`.

Sync usually settles this on its own. If a workspace still has files waiting on a choice, the [sync strip](/your-data/backup-and-sync) shows **Changed in both places** with "Each file keeps both versions until you choose one." For each file, choose **Keep the local version** or **Use the cloud version**. Using the cloud version saves this device's copy beside it, with "this device" and the time added before the extension.

## Deleting a file

Deleting a file on one device removes it from the newest cloud version and, at their next sync, from your other devices. BioBase removes it from those folders directly; it doesn't go to the system trash. A device that edited the file since its last sync keeps its edited copy and backs it up again.

To bring a deleted file back, use **Restore to folder** or **Save a copy** on an older version that still contains it in [version history](/your-data/backup-and-sync#version-history). Infera Cloud keeps the latest 30 versions per workspace and device, and files that aren't backed up can't be restored.

## When BioBase can't read the folder

If BioBase can't read the whole folder, for example because its drive is disconnected, it changes nothing: "BioBase could not read every file in this workspace folder, so nothing was changed. Reconnect the drive that holds it, then select Sync now."

## Restoring a version

**Restore to folder** downloads the version and checks each file before it changes the folder, then compares it with the folder file by file:

* A file you haven't edited since the last sync takes the restored version.
* A file the restored version doesn't contain is removed, unless you've edited it since the last sync.
* A file you've edited since the last sync keeps your edit. If the restored version differs from the last synced one, it's saved beside your file with "conflict from", the device and the time added before the extension.

Files this workspace has never synced stay as they are. Newer versions stay in version history while they're among the 30 kept, so you can restore one of them afterward.

## Workspace removed elsewhere

If the workspace was deleted from another device or the web app: "This workspace was removed from Infera. Its files are still in this folder."
