# The Data Agent

> Ask questions, choose a model, follow long analyses, and find the Data Agent's output files.

## The header

The header shows the session title, the model the session runs on, and the project folder. **Web workspace** opens the same session in the Infera web app. **Show analysis record** opens each step of the analysis, recorded as it runs. **Refresh Data Agent workspace** re-reads the session and its sync state.

## Ask a question

Type in the composer and press Enter to send; Shift+Enter adds a line. To point the Data Agent at specific files, drag them from the file explorer into the composer. Only files inside the project folder are accepted; anything else shows "Choose files from this project directory."

## Choose a model

Open the model chip under the composer, then select the model row to see every model your account can use. Models are grouped **Thinking**, **Standard**, and **Fast**, strongest first within each group, and each row carries its maker's logo. Type in **Search models** to filter, and use the arrow keys to move through the list. Where a model offers a choice of **Reasoning effort**, it appears under the model row.

Your choice applies to the next reply and every reply after it, in this workspace only. **Use account default** returns to the model an administrator set for the account in the Infera web app. The list refreshes when you switch back to BioBase, so a model added to your account appears without a restart. You can't change the model while a response is running.

If your account has no model, the composer shows "No analysis model is available for this account. Contact Infera support to enable one." Infera support is [hello@infera.bio](mailto:hello@infera.bio).

## Long analyses

While a response runs, the reply header shows **Working**, the number of steps so far, and the elapsed time. A pulsing dot marks the workspace in the sidebar and its Data Agent tab.

A message sent during a response waits and starts automatically when the response finishes; the composer shows how many are waiting. Up to 10 can wait at once.

If a response finishes, fails, or needs your input while BioBase isn't focused on that session, BioBase sends a desktop notification. Notifications for protected workspaces leave out the workspace title. Select it to open the session. To turn these off, go to Settings, **Notifications**.

## Stop a response

Select **Stop** beside **Send**. The response ends immediately, even if the model has stopped answering, and you can send your next message straight away. A message you send before the stopped response finishes closing waits and runs after it.

A stopped or interrupted turn keeps its **Agent activity** and any errors in the conversation, so you can see what happened before you continue.

## When the Data Agent asks you something

A **Waiting on your answer** card shows the question. Type your answer in the composer and send it.

## Where the files go

The Data Agent writes its outputs into the project folder. Files a synced workspace pulls from Infera Cloud arrive in a `research` folder inside the project folder. Open them from the [file explorer](/workspace/files).

Code the Data Agent runs executes in a cloud analysis environment on copies of the project files it needs, and its outputs come back to your project folder. To work in your own local environment, use the [terminal](/workspace/terminal). See [where your data lives](/your-data/where-your-data-lives) for how BioBase handles those copies.

## Sync state

The strip under the header shows the workspace state: **Local**, **Cloud**, **Synced**, or **Diverged**, with the space it takes on this device. **Open workspace folder** opens the folder in your operating system. See [backup and sync](/your-data/backup-and-sync) for what each state means.
