# Documents and reports

> PDFs, HTML reports, Vega-Lite charts, Word documents and images.

## PDF

A PDF opens fitted to the pane width and zooms from 25% to 500%. Use **Find in PDF** to search its text.

A password-protected PDF reads "This PDF is password-protected". Remove the password in the application that created it. Any other PDF BioBase can't read shows "Failed to load PDF preview".

## HTML reports

An .html or .htm report renders with its scripts blocked and without network access, so it draws from the file alone. The header shows the report's title. A report that contains scripts reads: "Scripts stay blocked here. Download the report to open its interactive figures in a browser."

## Charts

A .json file holding a Vega-Lite spec draws as an interactive chart. The header shows the spec's title, its mark type and, when the spec carries its data, the row count.

If the file declares the Vega-Lite schema but can't be read as a spec, the viewer reads: "This file is not a readable chart specification. Download it to open it in a compatible application." If the spec reads but the chart fails to draw, it reads: "This chart could not be drawn. Download the spec to open it in a Vega editor, or open the PNG the analysis saved beside it."

## Word documents

A .docx file opens read only, laid out as pages with headers, footers, footnotes and endnotes. Links don't open, comments aren't shown, and images stored outside the document are removed. Legacy .doc files don't open.

A password-protected document reads: "This file is password protected. Remove the password in the application that created it, then open the unprotected copy here." Any other document BioBase can't read shows "This document could not be opened. It may be encrypted or damaged."

## Images

.png, .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .webp, .svg, .bmp and .ico files open in the image viewer, which zooms from 25% to 800%.
