# Sign in

> Connect BioBase to your Infera account through your browser, and what the connection means for this device.

The first time you open the Data Agent in a project, the pane shows **Connect Data Agent** and, under **Local directory**, the folder the Data Agent will work in. Cloud backup is a separate setting; see [Backup and sync](/your-data/backup-and-sync).

<Steps>
  <Step title="Select Sign in to Infera">
    Your default browser opens Infera's sign-in page. The button reads **Waiting for browser sign-in** until you finish.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Sign in through your browser">
    Sign in with your Infera account. If you don't have one, select **Create an account**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Approve access">
    The consent page reads **BioBase Desktop is requesting access** and lists the two permissions BioBase asks for:

    * "View your Data Agent sessions, files, reports, and remaining credits"
    * "Run Data Agent analyses that read and edit files in the folder you connect, and change or delete your sessions. Files the agent reads are sent to Infera, and analyses use your workspace credits"

    **Authorization code will be sent to** shows the return address on this computer. Select **Approve**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Return to BioBase">
    The browser tab reads **BioBase is ready**. Close it and return to BioBase.
  </Step>
</Steps>

If you don't finish in the browser in time, or you cancel there, the pane shows "Sign-in did not finish. Try again and approve the request in your browser." Select **Sign in to Infera** again.

BioBase keeps you signed in between restarts. If your operating system's credential store is unavailable, the pane shows "Your OS credential store is unavailable. This sign-in lasts only until BioBase closes." and you sign in again after each restart.

To sign out, go to Settings, **Data Agent**, the **Account** panel, then **Sign out**. Signing out removes the sign-in from this device and asks Infera to end its access. To end a device's access from the web, revoke BioBase under **Connected apps** in the Infera web app.

Next, open [your first project](/getting-started/first-project).
